Bethlehem Separation Wall
Friday 10th February
This morning we went to have a look at the separation wall that divides the country. The wall cuts off people from family, friends, jobs and land putting them through the humiliation of the checkpoint queues where they may or may not be allowed through. The wall is not on the border between Israel and Palestine but cuts through huge swathes of Palestinian territory, effectively including the illegal Jewish settlements into Israel. The wall has become a powerful symbol of the oppression of the Palestinian people.
In the Evening we went to another part of the wall to join in prayers for its downfall.
Later on, after tea we heard from some of the EAPPI volunteers who told us of the daily humiliations of the Palestinian people, of young boys imprisoned and killed, of settlers designing their village so that their sewage would pollute Palestinian crops, of the illegal seizure of land. They also told us of Israelis who see the injustice for what it is and who bravely speak out, groups such as Breaking the Silence, a group for ex-IDF soldiers who tell their stories.
